Getting started
- Pick a photo. Choose any photo that has location data. The place it was taken becomes the centre of your saved place.
- Check the area. MemoryPlaces draws a 1 km circle around that photo and shows you which photos match before anything is saved. Resizing the circle, from one block to a whole city, is part of Basic and Lifetime.
- Create the album. MemoryPlaces creates an album in Apple Photos with every matching photo.
- Refresh when you’re back. After your next visit, open the saved place and tap Refresh to add the newer photos. Albums don’t change until you do this.
Frequently asked questions
Why does MemoryPlaces ask for access to my whole photo library?
To find every photo taken near a place, MemoryPlaces has to read the location metadata of the photos in your library and then create an album in Apple Photos. Both need photo-library access. Matching happens on your device; nothing is uploaded.
If you chose Limited Access, MemoryPlaces can only see the photos you selected, so places will look empty or incomplete. To change this, go to Settings › Privacy & Security › Photos › MemoryPlaces and choose Full Access.
A photo I picked has no location, or a place shows fewer photos than I expected.
MemoryPlaces can only match photos that carry location data. Photos often lack it when they were taken with Location Services off for the Camera, saved from messages or the web, screenshots, or imported from a camera without GPS.
To check a photo: open it in Apple Photos and swipe up (or press the info button). If there is no map, there is no location data. You can add a location in Photos (info panel › Add a Location), then refresh the place in MemoryPlaces.
How do I refresh a saved place?
Open MemoryPlaces, tap the saved place, and tap Refresh. New photos and videos from that place are added to the album in Apple Photos. Nothing else in the album or your library changes.
Refresh is always something you start. MemoryPlaces does not update albums in the background.
How do I share a place with my family?
On iPhone or iPad with MemoryPlaces 1.0.7 or later, or on a Mac with macOS 27 and MemoryPlaces 1.0.8 or later, open the saved place and tap or click Family. The first time, choose where it goes: your Family album, one Apple Shared Album for all your places, or a new shared album just for this place. The next steps depend on your system.
iOS 27: iOS shows its New Shared Album screen; for a new album for the place, the place name is already filled in. Tap ✓, then tap ✓ again on the next screen to add the place’s photos and videos. They are added in original resolution. For a place you shared with an earlier version of MemoryPlaces, you’re asked to pick that place’s shared album once on that screen before you tap ✓.
iOS 26 or earlier: MemoryPlaces prepares the photos on your device and opens the share sheet. Tap Add to Shared Album, choose the album, then confirm. This way adds photos only, up to 100 at a time: for a place with more than 100 photos, a card shows how many are in and how many are left, you tap Add the next 100, and you choose the same shared album again, not a new one. To send a video, use Share.
Mac with macOS 27: macOS shows its New Shared Album panel; for a new album for the place, the name is already filled in. Click Create, then click Add on the next panel to add the place’s photos and videos. When the album isn’t a new one, check the Shared Album field near the bottom of that panel before you click Add. Family on a Mac needs macOS 27; on an earlier macOS, use ⋯ › Share to send photos and videos.
Next time you use Family for that place, only what wasn’t added before is sent. Family members accept the shared album invitation once; each new shared album has its own invitation.
Why do I have to paste the album name myself?
On iOS 27 and macOS 27 you don’t: when you choose a new shared album for a place, the name is already filled in. On iOS 26 or earlier, MemoryPlaces hands your photos to the iOS share sheet, and you create the new shared album there, so the name is something you paste in yourself. MemoryPlaces copies the place name for you: in the share sheet, tap Add to Shared Album › Shared Album › New Shared Album, paste the name, then confirm. Either way, the album lives in your own iCloud, not with MemoryPlaces.
Can friends without an iPhone see the photos? How do I turn the link off?
Yes. Open the saved place, choose ⋯, then Share, and choose Share as a link. Each time you do this, a new shared album is made for the place, and the link comes from that album. The steps depend on your system.
iOS 27: MemoryPlaces first shows what the link allows. Then iOS shows its New Shared Album screen with the place name filled in and Sharing Options set to let anyone with the link join. Tap ✓, then tap ✓ again on the next screen to add the place’s photos and videos. Back in MemoryPlaces, Your link is ready shows the link, with Copy Link and Share Link…. Photos keeps uploading in the background, so the album may take a few minutes to fill in. After you close that panel, open the album in Photos to get its link again.
Mac with macOS 27: MemoryPlaces first shows what the link allows; click Continue. Then macOS shows its New Shared Album panel with the place name filled in and Who Can Access set to Anyone with the Link. Click Create, then Add on the next panel. Back in MemoryPlaces, Your link is ready shows the link, with Copy Link and Share Link…. Share as a link on a Mac needs macOS 27.
Anyone who has the link can view the album, download everything in it, and join to add their own photos, with no Apple Account or Apple device needed. They also see your name as the album’s owner, and what people add counts toward your iCloud storage. Photos are shared with their location unless you turn Location off under Options on the second screen or panel.
To turn the link off, open the album’s sharing settings in Photos (the people button) and change access to people you choose, or delete the shared album. The exact wording differs a little between iPhone and Mac, so go by what Photos shows.
iOS 26 or earlier: MemoryPlaces opens the share sheet. Tap Add to Shared Album, make a new shared album, paste the name MemoryPlaces copied for you, and confirm. Then open the album in Photos › Shared Albums, tap the People button, turn on Public Website and tap Share Link. Anyone with the link can view the album in a web browser. A place with more than 100 photos gets its first 100 in the link album. To stop sharing, turn Public Website off in the same place.
Apple makes the link from the shared album in your iCloud; MemoryPlaces never uploads your photos.
What is free, and what do the paid options unlock?
MemoryPlaces is free to download. For free you can create up to three place albums, refresh them as often as you like, and share them with Family, Share, or a link; each free album uses a fixed 1 km area. Basic Annual (a yearly subscription) and Lifetime (a one-time purchase) both unlock unlimited place albums, resizing the area around a place, and iCloud Sync. Prices are shown in your local currency in the App Store. See our Terms of Use for details.
I reinstalled the app or got a new device. How do I restore my purchase?
Make sure the device is signed in with the same Apple Account you used to buy, then open MemoryPlaces and go to Settings › Restore Purchases. There is no charge to restore. If it doesn’t work, check that you’re not signed in with a different Apple Account, then email us.
On my Mac, opening an album from MemoryPlaces shows my whole library instead of the album.
This is a limitation of Apple Photos on macOS: apps can open Photos, but macOS does not provide a way to open a specific album directly. When this happens, look in the Photos sidebar under My Albums — the album MemoryPlaces created is there with the same name as your saved place. On iPhone and iPad, albums open directly.
How do I manage or cancel my subscription?
On iPhone or iPad: Settings › [Your Name] › Subscriptions › MemoryPlaces. On Mac: App Store app › your name (bottom left) › Account Settings › Manage Subscriptions. Cancelling takes effect at the end of the current period. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
Can I get a refund?
Purchases are made through Apple, so refund requests go to Apple: visit reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, and choose the purchase. We can’t issue refunds ourselves, but email us if you’re stuck.
If I delete a saved place or the app, what happens to my photos?
Nothing happens to your photos. When you delete a saved place in MemoryPlaces, the app asks whether to keep the album in Photos or remove it too; either way no photo is deleted. Deleting the app removes its own data from your device. Albums it created stay in Apple Photos until you delete them there, and deleting an album in Photos never deletes the photos in it.
Does MemoryPlaces upload my photos or need an account?
No. Matching runs on your device, there is no account, and the App Store privacy label is “Data Not Collected.” Details are in our Privacy Policy.
